GST 1
General Service Technician 1 (GST1) is the introductory class in
Ketchikan High School's General Service Technician
Program. Applicants must be in Grade 10 or higher and in good
academic standing. Each applicant must complete an enrollment interview
and skills assessment before being accepted in the GST Program.
In the first semester GST1 covers Introduction to Automotive Service.
Each system of the automobile is introduced in the enviroment of basic
maintenance service.
In the second semester students will work on Brakes and Suspension
Systems.
GST1 is 50% classroom and 50% shop.
GST1 Prerequisite: Grades 10-12, Enrollment Interview, Skills
Assessment. Small Engines class recommended in Grade 9.
Course Fee: $60 per year.
Course Length: 2 semesters, 28 minute classes, 179 hours total. 1
elective credit.
Required: 3 ring binder, coveralls, combination lock
Provided: Shop Shirt, locker, Safety Glasses, Pressure Gauge,

GST 2/3
General Service Technology 2/3 is a two hour advanced class for
students who have completed GST1 with a B or better. Students will work
to master their 160 skill portfolio in Electrical/Electronic Systems,
Engine Performance, Advanced Brakes, Suspension and Steering,
Transmissions and Drivetrains, Heating and Air Conditioning, and
Engines. GST 2 is for second year GST students. GST3 is for third year
Senior GST students. GST2/3 is 25% classroom and 75% shop.
Senior students in either GST2 or GST3 are eligible to compete in the
AAA/Ford Student Auto Skills Troubleshooting Contest.
GST2 Prerequisites: Completion of GST1 with B or better.
GST3 Prerequisites: Completion of GST2 with B or better
Course Fee: $60 per year
Course Length: 2 semesters, 358 hours, 2 elective credits ( Optional
math credit for Seniors replaces one credit)
Required: 3 ring binder, combination lock, coveralls.
Provided: 2 personal shop shirts, shop jacket, locker.

SMALL ENGINES
Introductory Shop Class
on the theory, operation, and teardown and reassembly of overhead
valve and valve-in-block engines. Students will covers learn basic
tools, precision measurement, horsepower and torque, fuel systems,
lubrication and cooling systems, cylinders, heads, carburetors, and
ignition systems. 50% classroom, 50% shop.

WELDING
Ketchikan High School's newest shop class will be using the new 8
station Welding Lab.Students will learn structural stick welding (SMAW)
techniques on steel plate in all positions, cutting with the
Oxy-Acetylene Torch and with Plasma Arc. They will also have practice
using MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW) on aluminum and steel.
10% Classroom, 90% Shop

Course Length: 1 year, 179 hours, 1 elective credit.

INSTRUCTOR
David Sweetman is an
ASE Certified Master Automobile Technician with L1 Advanced Engine
Performance Certification. He graduated from Humboldt State University
with a BA in Industrial Arts, Power and Transportation. He was worked
in both dealer and independent shops and operated his own shop, Bug
Doc, in Arcata, California. He has been an educator for over 20 years
in Southeast Alaska and has been at Ketchikan High School for over 11
years as Automotive Technology Instructor.
